If you are a candidate for japanese hair straightening, your stylist may choose to perform a HAIR STRAND TEST on you.

The Hair Strand Test reveals the texture of your hair, as well as its porosity and elasticity -- This information helps your hair stylist decide on the strength of hair straightening relaxer to use.

A Hair Strand Test also alerts your cosmetician about whether to use a conditioner-filler on the hair before applying chemicals, or whether to use a base-petroleum protection layer.

If your stylist has any question about how your hair will react to a japanese straightening, they will perform a Hair Strand Test.

The Hair Strand Test involves the following:
  • Pulling your hair (to ascertain the degree of hair elasticity)
  • the "Finger Test"
  • Applying a small amount of relaxer to determine how your hair reacts.

    If you "pass" the Hair Strand test, the next step is a japanese straigtening. This depends greatly on hair type.

    Regular strength relaxers are appropriate for normal & medium textured hair, & mild relaxer formula is appropriate for fine, chemically lightened or colored hair.

    Coarse hair requires stronger relaxers.

    Due to variations in hair type, your cosmetician may choose to schedule an appointment prior to a straightening, to they give you a Hair Strand Test. Be assured, the Strand Test can often be a useful stylist tool to help ensure your straightening is successful & that your hair remains healthy & undamaged during the process.
